The Dragonslayer of Cappadocia
Commissioned illustration for a historical fiction novel cover set in the early 4th century AD. The artwork portrays Saint George as a Roman cavalry officer, riding a white horse and carrying a draco standard, set against the distinctive “lunar” landscapes of Cappadocia, with rock spires and cave dwellings extending across the full wraparound cover.
Particular attention was given to the character’s panoply, accurately depicting late Roman military equipment such as the lorica musculata, ornate parade helmet with face mask, and cavalry ornaments, ensuring historical authenticity. Designed with a cinematic approach, the scene is set at sunset to enhance the epic atmosphere—using warm light, long shadows, and a subtle halo effect behind the rider to reinforce the heroic narrative.
